Facts & Figures
Location
Eching is the southernmost municipality in the district of Freising, bordering the district of Dachau (Haimhausen) to the west and the district of Munich (Garching, Unterschleißheim) to the south. It is situated roughly 10 km from the city limits of both Freising and Munich.
Residents
Eching currently has just over 15,000 residents. These spread across 7 municipal districts: Dietersheim, Deutenhausen, Eching, Eching-Ost, Günzenhausen, Hollern and Ottenburg.
History
Eching was first mentioned in a document in 773 as Ehingas. In 2023, the municipality therefore celebrated its 1,250th birthday. However, numerous archaeological finds, including those from the Bell Beaker culture (around 2400 BC), show that the area was inhabited much earlier.
Coat of arms
The highly controversial coat of arms of Eching depicts the Freising blackamoor, the St. Andrew's Cross, and two heather blossoms. The crowned blackamoor's head is the heraldic symbol of the Prince-Bishopric of Freising, to which Eching belonged from 1311 until secularization in 1802. The St. Andrew's Cross represents the mother parish of St. Andreas. It is flanked by two blossoms, which represent the Garching Heath nature reserve.
Nature
In search for a place to relax and cool off, locals have a choice, as Lake Eching and Lake Hollern are both within walking distance. In addition to the bathing lakes, Eching is known for its numerous nature reserves in the surrounding area: Garching Heath, Echinger Lohe, Mallertshofer Holz mit Heiden or the Isar floodplains – all reachable on foot or by bike in just a few minutes.
Culture
Bürgerhaus Eching (Community Center) offers a packed cultural program all year round, from concerts, theater and readings to cabaret.
Of particular historical importance are the Roman Catholic parish church of St. Andreas, which dates back to a Romanesque building from the 12th century, the remains of Ottenburg Castle or the Bronze Age barrows in the Garching Heath – one of the oldest nature reserves in Germany.
Economy
Eching is a flourishing center of commerce and industry. Its proximity to the Technical University of Munich Garching gives local companies direct access to highly qualified employees in the technical and scientific fields.
In particular, however, Eching is known for its furniture retail. Mömax, POCO, Möbel Roller, KARE, Maisons du Monde, various specialty kitchen outlets and, of course, IKEA. In 1974, as the Swedish company started to expand to Germany, the choice of the first location fell on - exactly - Eching. So if you still need decorations or other utensils for your apartment, you're spoiled for choice and can go shopping to your heart's content.
